In addition to the interesting information and articles presented below, I would like to draw your attention to three major issues:

- Innovation Award for Road Transport in Developing Countries. We would like to encourage you to submit a project for this prestigious award. You may find more detailed information about it by clicking here.
- The IRF Geneva Board of Directors Meeting will be held on 24 November 2010 in New Delhi. There are many important issues to be discussed and decisions for the future to be taken. We are looking forward to welcoming you in New Delhi at the meeting which is held in conjunction with the 5th Regional IRF Conference on Road Safety.
- The Working Group "Safer Roads" will meet in meet on 24 November 2010 also in New Delhi. The 5th Regional IRF Conference on Road Safety is the perfect setting for such a meeting. The Working Group will not only finalise work in progress but also discuss the future organisation of the group and its work.

We look forward to working together with you to promote roads that are safe, economically viable and ecologically friendly.

New edition of the Senior Road Executive Programme 2011

The 16th Senior Road Executives Programme held at the University of Birmingham (UK), from 4th to 16th April, 2011, promises to be the most informative ever.

Around 30 highly respected and experienced experts and authorities from around the world will speak on a variety of the most pressing and pertinent issues facing the road sector today.



IRF Geneva appoints new Road Finance Counsellor

We are pleased to announce that Mr. Henry Kerali, Sector Manager Transport Sustainable Development Department (ECSSD) for Europe and Central Asia at the World Bank, will be the new IRF Road Finance Counsellor. He is succeeding Mr. Ian Heggie, former World Bank adviser who has over the many years done a tremendous job in helping the IRF address road finance questions.



For years Ian Heggie has been IRF strategic advisor on issues related to Road financing and funding. Well known for his expertise and experience in road funds management and Public-private partnerships, IRF has hugely benefitted from Ian's collaboration. We would like to thank Ian for his inspirational advice, many excellent presentations at IRF events and on other occasions and are honoured to have him in our IRF Man of the Year listings.

We wish him good health and all the best for the future.

IRF in South Africa - Live from the field

Under the theme "Preserving African Roads", the 4th edition of the IRF / SARF regional conference has opened up in Cape Town on 11th October 2010.

With more than 250 delegates from 22 countries, this year's conference has marked another successful collaboration between the South African Road Federation and the IRF.


12th meeting of the UN Road Safety Collaboration

Some 70 participants representing the major stakeholders involved in road safety of the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration (UNRSC) met in the Executive Board Room of the World Health Organization (WHO) in Geneva on 5-6 October 2010. IRF was represented by Sibylle Rupprecht and Maria Novikov.


IRF Policy Committee on ITS: International cooperation essential

On 6 & 7 October the Institute for Transport Studies of the University of Leeds hosted the fall meeting of the IRF policy Committee on ITS. The two-day meeting programme was packed with a high variety of presentations and working sessions and had a very informative and dense character.

Workforce gap set to widen

New analysis has sounded a warning for the road industry about the likely extent of the gap between the supply of, and demand for, professional skills over the coming decade. The broad findings of Austroads' 2009 Roads Workforce Analysis were presented at this week's Roads Australia Capacity Chapter workshop in Melbourne.
