Workshop: Novel Practices for Effective Road Assets Management
March 31, 2022 @ 2:00 pm – 3:00 pm CEST

About the Workshop
On 31 March 2022, IRF was pleased to host an IRF Workshop on “Novel Practices for Effective Road Assets Management”. The workshop was held in a hybrid format – in person at Intertraffic Amsterdam, and via Zoom.
Growing population, urbanization, climate change and the energy transition will be key drivers of change in transport in the next 10-15 years. According to UN Habitat, by 2050 seven out of ten people will be living in urban areas. In 30 years, 3 billion cars will be on our roads — whether autonomous or not. That means one car for every three people on the planet.
Direct damage to transport infrastructure from natural disasters costs already billions of dollars annually, and indirect costs to inclusive economic growth from severed freight and passenger movements are immeasurable. Equally, the cost of congestion, the adjustments needed to accommodate the arrival of autonomous vehicles and the impact of the energy transition further add to the daunting picture. Strengthening efficiency, climate proofing, resilience, and prevention & preparedness of our road assets is critical for the resilience of the entire society facing various external challenges ranging from climate change to pandemics.
What strategies would best help meet those challenge? How do we set priorities and how do we pay for the adaptation efforts needed? What the innovative practices that can help this transition?
Certainly, there’s an urgent need to innovate asset management. Recent technology innovations such as Digital Twins have great potential to enable the needed approach for road condition predictions and proactive asset management. But what more do we need?
Note: Presentations of the speakers can be found within the programme below.
