IRF Workshop on “Resilient Road Infrastructure: How to plan, build and manage for current and future challenges”

April 28, 2020 @ 3:00 pm 4:00 pm CEST

Infrastructure is an economic priority in many countries across the world. Increasingly complex projects are being commissioned to stimulate sluggish economies, upgrade old systems and cater for growing mobility needs of changing populations. With economic growth and fast-growing populations leading to significant urbanisation, the demand for new transport infrastructure is predicted to see massive growth in coming decades. The new challenges: changing demographics; the increasing expectations of businesses, service users and the public; the need to reduce carbon emissions and waste; and the need deliver infrastructure resilient to climate change and extreme weather events. All create a dynamic and testing environment for the industry and those commissioning new projects.

By contrast with other industries, which have successfully harnessed technological advances to improve and reshape their products and services, the infrastructure sector has not yet fully embraced the potential of the latest techniques and tools. Today’s infrastructure is not only aging but even the approach to planning, design, and constructing is rapidly becoming out-of-date as well. With trillions-worth investments needed for existing and new infrastructure assets, the need to do things differently is critical.

Organised by IRF (Geneva) on 28 April 2020 this on-line workshop provided insights into existing solutions to current and future infrastructure challenges. How to optimise road projects? How to significantly reduce the carbon footprint? How to increase road lifespan while decreasing costs? How can digitalisation and new technologies help deliver resilient, efficient and sustainable infrastructure?
