Director Development Impact (DIME), The World Bank
Arianna Legovini developed a new trial-and-adopt technology to rethink how we do development and maximise its impact. Development projects are costly and late, with an inadequate evidence base. Trial-and-adopt is used to understand how to optimise the design of development projects and secure uptake. The technology has three parts: (i) group dynamics to motivate technology uptake, (ii) programmatic research to increase technical quality and reduce costs, and (ii) co- production to build local agencies’ analytical capacity to manage for impact. The new projects have adaptable designs, early trials to test and adopt the best ideas, and higher impact trajectories. They implement faster and better. The knowledge generated informs future projects and country and sector portfolios. Co-produced with local agencies, lessons spill over to country policies. The value for money of the trail-and-adopt technology is considerable. Arianna is currently Director for Development Impact at the World Bank, leading the largest and most exciting impact evaluation research group worldwide.
